Selected as one of the
Government buildings to take part in Phase 1 of A
Symphony of Lights, City Hall at 12 stories high is one
of the smallest buildings participating in the show. This low
rise building, that was opened in 1962, has a prominent waterfront
location immediately in front of Statue Square and the HSBC
Hong Kong headquarters building.
As a major arts venue, registry office and library, City
Hall remains a firm favourite amongst the people of Hong Kong.
As one of the most important Bauhaus style buildings in Hong
Kong it was crucial that any technical solution should be
sympathetic to the architecture and have minimal impact on
the day time aesthetic of the building.
The Electrical & Mechanical Services Department (EMSD)
were tasked with the implementation of the new lighting of
all government buildings joining the show. Following an open
tender process, Wing Hing (E&M) Ltd was appointed as the
main contractor to carry out the works and to implement a
lighting design produced by Laservision.
Ptarmigan was appointed as a sub-consultant to undertake
the system design and commissioning.
Laservision's design proposed a LED solution, and as such
City Hall became one of the earliest projects in Hong Kong
to adopt LED for its façade lighting. The elegant design
has high impact and allows City Hall to "punch above
its weight" in the nightly spectacular.
