Tianjin
is the third largest city in China, located on the Hai He river
to the southwest of Beijing it has a long, often turbulent history,
as major port city and trading centre.
Full Moon Tower in Galaxy
Park was a gift from the people of Japan to the City of Tianjin.
The park, which is an extremely popular destination at all times
of day, is well used by local residents to practice such diverse
activities as T'ai Chi, Chinese Opera or to fly elaborate kites.
At the centre of the park is Full Moon Tower, this 52 metre
high tower sits within a reflection pool facing the new municipal
museum. Built in 2003 the tower was originally lit with white
cold cathode, following a review by the Tianjin City Image and
Environmental Commission a decision was made to improve the
night image of the park and to change the tower's lighting.
Beijing Teon Scenik Technologies
asked Vancouver based TIR Systems to propose a new design that
could be animated, dynamic and help the city realise their night
time vision of the park.
Ptarmigan was appointed by
TIR to design, supply, install and programme the control system
as well as commission the fixtures.
In 2006 Ptarmigan Consulting was named, along with Darren Luce
and Teon Scenik, as recipients of the Paul Waterbury Award for
Outdoor Lighting Design by the judges of the International Illumination
Design Awards. These prestigious awards are organised by the
Illuminating Engineering Society of North America. |
